Microsoft is introducing a new consumer tier to its Microsoft 365 subscription offerings called “Microsoft 365 Basic” at $20/year or $1.99/month. The plan will be available worldwide on January 30th.

  • 100GB of cloud storage space in OneDrive.
  • Ad-free experience in Outlook on the web and mobile.
  • Upto Five devices support.
  • Additional security features include:
    • Data encryption for Outlook mailbox
    • Attachment scanning for viruses and malware
    • Checking for suspicious links
  • Additional features for OneDrive, such as:
    • Personal Vault for sensitive files
    • Password-protected and expiring links
    • Ransomware data recovery
    • Bulk file storage (coming later this year)
  • Additional technical support is available over the phone or online chat for apps and Windows 11.

Existing OneDrive 100 GB Subscribers 

As per the announcement from Microsoft, existing OneDrive 100GB subscribers will be moved to the Microsoft 365 Basic plan starting January 30th. In addition, Microsoft 365 Basic plan members will receive “advanced security features” such as ransomware recovery and password-protected sharing links in OneDrive in the upcoming months.

The Microsoft 365 Personal plan will continue to be offered at $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year.

Comparison to Other Services

The Microsoft 365 Basic plan is more cost-effective compared to competitors’ offerings. For instance, the Google Workspace program starts at $9.99 per month and includes 1TB of storage, professional support, and standard productivity software such as Google Drive, Calendar, Meet, and Gmail. It is also more affordable than Zoho’s Standard Workplace plan, priced at $3 per user per month billed annually, and offers a maximum storage capacity of 10GB.
